European Nutraceutical Association
Welcome to the website of the European Nutraceutical Association (ENA)!
The ENA is a scientific society committed to the product group of nutraceuticals.
Nutraceuticals are nutritional products that provide health and medical benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. In contrast to pharmaceuticals however, these are not synthetic substances or chemical compounds formulated for specific indications. These are products that contain nutrients (partly in concentrated form) and mostly are assigned to the category of food. Dietary supplements are a typical example for nutraceuticals, but also dietetic and functional foods may be counted among these products.

Safety of Beta Carotene
Well-known studies on relatively high doses (1
) of isolated beta-carotene gave indications of increased risk of lung cancer in a high risk population (smokers and asbestos workers). For years, the use of beta-carotene in food supplements for these risk groups was meant to be dangerous. Now, an expert panel of the European Food Safety Authority EFSA has given the all-clear and classified the daily intake of beta-carotene up to an amount of 15 mg in food additives or nutritional supplements as safe (3)
, even for smokers. more
